Safety and Environmental Management System for Offshore Operations and Assets

The fourth edition of API’s Recommended Practice (RP) 75 expands, revises, and adds to the scope of the previous RP 75 edition. The ultimate goal is to improve the management of safety and environmental risks through a safety and environmental system (SEMS) to prevent incidents at offshore oil and gas assets.

The fourth edition clarifies from previous versions of RP 75 how SEMS applies to a range of Operators and contractors that are involved in the operation of oil and natural gas assets. It makes clear that all entities, even those outside the company that owns the asset, should perform work within the scope of an agreed SEMS.

Furthering a culture of open communication. Personnel are expected to accept accountability for understanding and achieving the expectations contained in the SEMS. Personnel are required to continually monitor existing conditions and avoid complacency. Under the new version of RP75, a culture should exist where communication is open, clear, and concise which fosters understanding, encourages diverse opinions and constructive debate, and promotes transparency.

Center for Offshore Safety SEMS Certificates

The Center for Offshore Safety promotes Safety and Environmental Management Systems which deliver safe and reliable operations and operational integrity.

Upon completion of a SEMS audit by an independent COS-accredited ASP, and resolution of necessary corrective actions, operators can receive a certificate demonstrating that they meet the requirements of COS and expectations API Recommended Practice (RP) 75.

Any company with offshore operations that are interested in improving their safety systems, including oil and gas and wind operations.

Verify that your company's SEMS meet the requirements of  API RP 75 and receive recognition for your commitment to enhancing safety and environmental performance.

How is a SEMS Certificate earned?

Companies must establish, implement and maintain a SEMS meeting the requirements of the most current version of API RP 75, unless an earlier edition is mandated by local regulation. The SEMS must be then be audited by a COS-accredited Audit Service Provider.  Companies must then have their completed corrective action plan reviewed by a COS-accredited ASP.
